Kitsap County’s Department of Public Works begins road work on Seabeck Highway, between Calamity Lane NW and NW Gross Road, in late April.

The project involves widening the travel lanes on Seabeck Highway NW to 12 feet, paving roadway shoulders, and constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Seabeck Highway NW and NW Holly Road to improve safety for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Traffic studies identified the intersection of Seabeck Highway NW and NW Holly Road as a major accident location and a roundabout is an effective way to reduce these numbers. Traffic Design Engineers determined roundabouts reduce the number accidents by directing all the traffic in a counter clockwise manner, thereby eliminating conflict points. Speeds in a roundabout are reduced, typically to 25 miles per hour, which also supports safety.

One of the existing culverts in the project area – determined to be fish bearing – is being replaced with a three-sided concrete box structure to improve fish passage. Improvements to the existing stormwater collection system. New catch basins and storm pipes are also part of the project.

One lane of traffic will be maintained in the work zone throughout the project. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work area and work is designed to minimize traffic delays. Immediate access for emergency vehicles is maintained at all times, and crews will maintain access to driveways. The project begins late April and is expected to be complete by November 2015. The work is being done by Seton Construction under a $1.9 million dollar contract.
