School starts on a somber note | The Buc Stops Here | October

Eight years ago on Sept. 11, the United States faced a tragic and heartbreaking event.

Even though the terrorist attacks took place across the country from Kingston, I don’t think one student or staff has forgotten the attack and the war it caused. It has affected families from all over the country. I have relatives sent out to serve in the war, including my own father. I have friends who have brothers, sisters, relatives and friends who have been called to duty or are still on duty.

I cannot begin to explain all the responses you get from students at KHS when asked their opinion about this war that keeps raging on. Most responded to the question said the same blunt line, “This war needs to end.”

This month has been a rush as we adjusted to the third year of Kingston High School.

Sports teams are well into their practices and games. On Sept. 11 our football team played the North Kitsap Vikings at the North Kitsap School District Stadium. If you didn’t show up for the game, you missed out on a spectacular sporting event. Adrenaline was pumping not just for the players, but the fans and band as well.

We were hooked from the first quarter of the game to the end. Throughout the entire event we were cheering for a victory. Excitement mounted as we scored a touchdown in the third quarter. But sadly, we came up short with a final score of 28-20.

During halftime bands from both high schools performed then played the final song together as one band. Kingston Marching Band received a huge and well deserved applause when they finished their final number. That night it seemed everyone was at the top of their game.

The day after the football game, the band and cheerleaders visited the University of Washington during half time of a Huskies game their own stadium. I heard performing at UW was a blast. At the end of the day everyone came home exhausted but with a belly full of Dick’s Drive-in burgers great memories.

Next month we have our homecoming game on Oct. 16, against Klahowya Secondary School. Hopefully on our very own field. The team, students and families are looking forward to a great game with a homefield advantage.

From 8-11 p.m. following day from will be our homecoming dance held in the gym. So Bucs, come celebrate our first home field homecoming dressed in your finest, because win or lose, we always cheer our school on in Buccaneer style. Go Bucs.
