Poulsbo firefighter and paramedic Bruce Lowrie recently received a Medal of Valor for his efforts at a shooting that occured on Bainbridge Island in July 2017.
The award was given out at the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Awards Ceremony. Lowrie is part of the KCSO’s “Tactical Medics,” which is also part of the Kitsap County regional SWAT team, meaning they are dual trained as sheriff’s officers and medics.
On the night of July 8, 2017, a 34-year-old mentally unstable man opened fire in Eagle Harbor, shooting more than 150 rounds from his 50-foot sailboat. After nearly a four hour stand off, officers approached the boat and tossed a tear gas canister into the sailboat. A standoff occurred, and the man was shot. Lowrie provided medical support while the patient was transported to shore where a medic unit was waiting to transport him. The man eventually died en route to the hospital.
Lowrie received the Medal of Valor along with Deputy Sheriffs Chris Andrews, Shane Hanson, Jason Hedstrom, Andrew Hren, Greg Rice, Detective Eric Janson and Sargent Wilson Sapp.
