KINGSTON — The field of applicants for the upcoming principalship at Kingston High School has been cut to four, each of whom will be making their way to North Kitsap for interviews beginning this week.
One candidate, Christy Cole, current assistant principal of North Kitsap High School is already here. Cole will be interviewing with North Kitsap School District officials today and will be meeting with parents, students and community members this evening at 7 p.m. in the home and family classroom of Kingston Junior High School.
Cole has been an assistant principal at North Kitsap High School since 2001, and she also helped direct program development for and is now the lead administrator at the school’s pilot Small Learning Community, Polaris.
Katharine Gleysteen, currently an associate principal at Battle Ground High School and former principal of Klahowya Secondary School, will be interviewing with the district May 18 and meeting with the community at 7 p.m. that night also in the home and family classroom at Kingston Junior High.
At Battle Ground since January, Gleysteen has been working closely with the special education department to change the culture of special education while bridging the gap between it and general education.
At Klahowya, Gleysteen coordinated AP exams and course offerings and facilitated building technology needs.
J.D. McMahan will be interviewing with the district May 23 and meeting with the community that night at 7 p.m. in the KJH library.
McMahan comes in with five years of principal experience at two different schools in Oregon. From 2001-2005 he organized the AP honors program at Newport High School in Newport, Ore. Since then, he has been principal at Toledo Middle School.
Merrilee Carey will be interviewing with the district May 24 and meeting with community that night, also at 7 p.m. in the KJH library.
Carey has been serving as an assistant principal at Timblerline High School since 2001 and has managed the development and implementation of new curriculum and instructional changes through professional development.
She has also worked with administrative team and program leaders to define building vision and multiple pathways for student achievement.
Following the candidates’ visits to North Kitsap, district officials will then choose two and will then send a team to their respective schools.
A recommendation will be made to the school board at the June 8 regular board meeting.
