50 in mass shelter after Bremerton motel fire

A mass care shelter opened at noon Sept. 18 in Silverdale after 50 people were displaced by a fire in Bremerton.

The shelter has been established at the Silverdale United Methodist Church, 9982 Silverdale Way NW.

The fire was on Wheaton Way in a multi-unit complex. Bremerton Fire Department responded to the two-alarm commercial fire at the Midway Inn.

All occupants have been evacuated with some needing medical attention, including transport to St. Michael Medical Center, the BFD Facebook page says.

The fire is now out, and under investigation. Central Kitsap, South Kitsap and Navy fire departments assisted. The American Red Cross is helping fire victims.

While fire crews were working on the blaze, a car jumped a curb in the Saar’s parking lot in the grass where many of the displaced occupants of the motel were sitting.

One person was hit by the vehicle and given aid by BFD medics. Bremerton police are investigating the driver of the vehicle.

On average, the Red Cross, Northwest Region, responds to an emergency like this every six hours. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free. For more information about the Red Cross, go to www.redcross.org/.
