Forget “Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer” and “Miracle on 34th Street” or even “It’s a Wonderful Life” — of all the heartwarming Christmas specials, is there one that can compare to the poignant 1965 classic, “A Charlie Brown Christmas”?
BREMERTON — Great Western Sports (GWS) last week revealed its proposal for the public/private partnership to build a racetrack in Kitsap County, managing an even split between the two entities.
The cost of construction, estimated at $345 million, will come from $166 million from the corporation and the same amount from sales tax bonds. The remaining $13 million — 4 percent — will come from sales tax bonds that will be paid through taxes paid at the gate.
American soil. In this nation’s relatively brief history, attacks on it and its citizens have proved to be a recipe for war. At a time when holidays are getting into full swing, it’s important for us to remember that while we are still sifting through the wreckage caused by Sept. 11, 2001, Dec. 7, 1941 was the United States’ real Day of Infamy.
Although the War in Iraq has led to tragic deaths, the toll on America — which recently hit 2,000 — pales in comparison to World War II, where some 291,557 died in combat.
KINGSTON — Imagine going to a gym where you don’t lift weights, use Nautilus equipment or run on a treadmill. Or use one of those really complicated systems where you have to curl your arms and legs awkwardly around the various parts of a machine that is supposed to work your hips and abs at the same time.
POULSBO — It’s a rollercoaster.
When it comes to basketball season, the ride through the year can have an indefinite number of ups and downs; the poise a team shows in the face of either reveals the character of its players.
The jolly man in the red suit will be making special neighborhood visits in the North End with the help of local firefighters from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Poulsbo Fire Department within the next few weeks. Dates and locations are subject to change:
POULSBO — Two days after receiving its first blanket of snow, Little Norway welcomed the season in true Scandinavian style as Julefest came to life.
Miss Poulsbo Janna Murray lit the Christmas tree in Waterfront Park as the Sons of Norway dancers and singers filled Kvelstad Pavilion with holiday sounds, but all the celebrations were a prelude to the arrival of Lucia’s bride.
It would be difficult to find an actor better suited to the part of Ebenezer Scrooge than Jon Doll.
Not that he’s a stingy and cantankerous bah humbug type — far from it. It’s just that in real life he’s been on both sides of the financial fence.
For years he worked in retail for a national department store chain, but now he’s the Vice President of Development for United Way of King County.
Organizers of the Kingston and Port Gamble country holiday festivals want residents of their respective communities to be able to step away from the chaotic hustle and bustle of the season for one day and engage in some old-fashioned fun.
Both communities will be holding their annual country Christmas festivals this weekend, complete with hay rides, visits from Santa Claus, arts and crafts vendors, as well as new events.
POULSBO — The Kiwanis Club of Greater Poulsbo Foundation led the way for the biggest single day the 2005 Bellringer campaign has seen.
By 3 p.m. Monday, Bellringer had collected $2,474, which is a giant step toward its $30,000 goal.
Actors Darren Hembd and Christopher Dolan have to reach deep, real deep, in their actor’s bag of tricks to pull off the characters they portray in “A Tuna Christmas,” now playing at the Changing Scene Theatre Northwest in Bremerton, directed by Linda Jensen.
After all, neither of the young men resembles a Texas housewife, blonde-beehived busybody or pot-bellied redneck.

POULSBO — Kids of all ages have less than two weeks to make sure they haven’t been naughty, because Santa’s set to come to Liberty and Ne-Si-Ka bays nine days before Christmas.

POULSBO — In life, there are those who inspire, teaching valuable lessons in strength and courage.
North Kitsap High School sophomore Kara Charlot was an educator in this respect but not in the traditional sense.
Kara died with her family by her side Nov. 25 at Children’s Hospital in Seattle after nearly a year of battling infections and complications from her lifelong fight with cerebral palsy.
HANSVILLE — Driving on Hansville Road, some residents may have noticed colorful collages that have been nailed to telephone poles and other freestanding structures the past six months.
Are they trail markers? Are they supposed to represent something? Are they conveying a message?
During the Kitsap County Planning Commissions deliberation meeting Nov. 29, members unanimously agreed to recommend that the county commissioners approve the latest proposed versions of the Kingston and Suquamish sub-area plans.
POULSBO — Councilman Ed Stern and a host of others answered the Bellringer call as donations came in like snowflakes Thursday afternoon.

Stern topped the Jaegers’ donation of $201 by a single dollar and several other donors stepped up with $100 gifts of their own.
