“Blue Velvet” At the Orchard, 822 Bay St. Port Orchard
The Orchard’s midnight movie series continues with a trip into yet another underworld with David Lynch’s classic “Blue Velvet” showing May 17.
When it was released in 1986 (Lynch’s follow-up to “Dune”) the film was acclaimed for its stunning combination of American film noir and surreal elements. But it’s perhaps better remembered by its chilling story of a freakish sex slum underlying a small town.
Jeffrey Beaumont, the leading man played by Kyle MacLachlan, who’s returning home to that small town to visit his ailing father, stumbles upon this underworld when he finds a severed human ear in a field.
When local police are “unable” to investigate, he and the police detective’s daughter decide to do their own probing, which leads them to the wicked depravity that exists beneath the surface of a small townie nightclub.

“Young at Heart” at the Lynwood, 4569 Lynwood Center Road, Bainbridge Island
Proving the old adage that you’re as young (or as old) as you feel, a troupe of senior citizens take to rocking out in the 2007 film “Young at Heart” showing at the Lynwood this week.
The film documents the final weeks of rehearsal for the Young@Heart Chorus, a group from Northhampton, Mass., whose repertoire includes unexpected music, like James Brown and Sonic Youth songs, for a choir with the average age of 81.

On the small screen at Kitsap Library
To supplement rising fuel costs and the seasonal desire for vacationing, the Kitsap Regional Library is traveling the world without leaving the county this month.
In addition to presentations on “Walking the Gobi” with author and adventuress Helen Thayer and “Dream Trekking in Nepal” with local mountaineer David Burton, KRL will also be showing travel-related movies at different branches throughout May.
Check out films like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Smokey and the Bandit,” “Murder on the Orient Express” and “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” free at library branches throughout the county.
