Local cowgirl wins two championship titles in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Vanora Washburn of Poulsbo earned championship titles in Barrel Racing and Pole Bending at the 2017 AQHA West Level 1 Championships April 19-23.

AQHA is the abbreviation for American Quarter Horse Association.

Washburn, 16, is a sophomore at Olympic High School. She qualified for AQHA Level 1 West Championships at a series of regional events in Monroe and received her official invitation to attend earlier this month.

She also won a reserve champion title in the Stake Race competition and placed in the top 10 in Reining, Ranch Riding and Showmanship events.

Washburn received a prize package that included two Montana Silversmiths belt buckles, two gold and one silver trophy, cowboy boots, neck wreaths and five top-10 patches.

Washburn is a client of Matt Olson Training located in Poulsbo. She rode two quarter horses at the event: five-year-old FRC Genuine Memory and eight-year-old Question My Luck.

“Vanora has worked very hard for this and she represented Poulsbo, Kitsap County and Matt Olsen Training with skill and professionalism,” trainer Matt Olson said in an announcement of the competition results.

More than 1,543 entries competed for top honors at the championships.
