Bremerton coaches abuzz over state berth

Two Bremerton High School boys basketball coaches have lost their hair over the upcoming Class 3A state tournament.

Head coach Casey Lindberg and assistant Phil Olwell cut a deal with the team about two months ago, promising to get buzz cut hairstyles if the Knights qualified for state. The players fulfilled their end of the deal Tuesday, defeating Evergreen High School in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at districts.

So when school was dismissed Thursday, it was straight to the T Jz Gear and Trim on Callow Avenue North for Lindberg and Olwell, accompanied by seniors Terrick McGhee and Jarell Flora.

Lindberg was the first to feel the razor.

“You could fly to the moon with those bad boys,” McGhee cracked from across the room, referring to Lindberg’s newly exposed ears.

“What’s Kara going to say when you get home?” Olwell quipped about Lindberg’s wife before he, too, took a seat in the chair.

The symbol “G4” was carved into one side of Olwell’s head, a reference to the sport drink Gatorade, while Lindberg escaped with a clean shave.

Bremerton faces Franklin Pierce High School in a state seeding game Friday in Auburn and plays another seeding game Saturday, also in Auburn, against either Mount Rainier High School or Renton High School.
