SPORTS BRIEFS | Fogel hired to guide South Kitsap girls water polo

Published 4:13 pm Thursday, January 15, 2015

Zack Fogel will lead South’s girls water-polo team in their inaugural season this spring.

Fogel, who graduated from Interlake High School in Bellevue, said he was a competitive swimmer and water-polo player from age 8 to 25.

“This is my first time coaching for SK and I’m excited to get started,” Fogel said in a news release. “Water polo is a sport that isn’t played much here in the Pacific Northwest and I hope to foster the same passion I have for the world’s best sport. I look forward to helping the SKHS girls have a fun inaugural water polo season and developing a lasting program here in South Kitsap.”

Rodriguez named South’s track coach

South Kitsap School District officials announced the hiring of LaRae Rodriguez as the high school’s new track and field coach Wednesday morning.

Rodriguez has been an assistant coach for the Wolves since 2006, when she joined coach Joanne Warren’s staff. Warren resigned after the 2011 season to pursue an administrative position — she now is the assistant principal at Omak High School — and Kathy Ballew and Paul Zimmer co-coached the team the last three seasons. Ballew then announced her retirement at the conclusion of the 2013-14 school year.

In addition to her coaching duties, Rodriguez teaches language arts at South Kitsap High School.

Wolves suffer second straight setback

Isaiah Lewis and Eric Wattree combined for 35 points, but it was not enough as South Kitsap lost 64-55 on Friday at Gig Harbor in a Class 4A Narrows League boys basketball contest.

It was the second consecutive loss for the Wolves (8-5 overall, 2-3 league). The Tides (10-3, 4-1) were led by Sam Gagliardi, who scored a game-high 22 points.
