The Bainbridge Spartans (8-5, 6-1 in Olympic League) beat the North Kitsap Vikings (4-6, 2-4 OL) in girls basketball 47-25 at home Jan. 13, a win that keeps them in contention for first-place.

“[We] got a lot of good shots in the first half, but they just weren’t falling,” Bainbridge coach Zach Burnham said. “And I think it’s just a theme of a big rivalry game.”

Viking Jasmine Sunnenberg was able to tally the first points of the game for either squad off an immediate layup within the first ten seconds of the game. Spartan Anna Rowe was able to drill a three-pointer, giving the Spartans their first lead at 7-5.

Rowe got things going early in the second quarter with a mid-range jumper, giving Bainbridge their largest lead at 13-8. Viking Addison Jess got NK’s first points of the quarter with a layup, making the score 15-10.

Bainbridge led NK 25-18 at half. Rowe led the Spartans with 9 points and Jess and Abby Marrero both had 6 for the Vikings.

“We didn’t overcome the adversity that we needed to overcome [in the first half],” NK coach Stuart Patterson said. “We got a little discouraged about what was going on.”

Bainbridge outscored NK 13-2 to end the third quarter, largely through strong defensive play and continuing to force turnovers. The Spartans led 38-20 entering the fourth quarter.

Viking Avery Lynch drilled a three-pointer to kick off the scoring in the fourth, shrinking NK’s deficit to 15. The Vikings implemented a full-court press to attempt to get themselves back in the game late.

NK only scored seven points in the second half. Rowe led the Spartans with 13 points on the night and Jess led the Vikings with 8.

“I mean, that’s a big win for us, against our old basketball coach,” Rowe said. “High respect for him, but we really came into this game wanting to beat them.”
