The No. 9-seeded South Kitsap Wolves (6-13, 5-11 in South Puget Sound League) saw their season come to an end after losing 4-1 on the road to the No. 8-seeded Bonney Lake Panthers (9-12, 7-10) in the first round of the SPSL 4A Baseball Tournament May 5.
“It’s sort of what we’ve done all season,” South Kitsap head coach Nick Kenyon said. “Giving away games instead of winning games. It’s really hard to win in baseball, especially in the SPSL.”
Brody Gadberry got the start on the mound for the Wolves, relinquishing three first-inning runs off multiple SK fielding errors and an RBI double, allowing the Panthers to get out to an early 3-0 lead, creating a tough hole for the Wolves to climb out of.
In the bottom of the second, the Wolves let up three consecutive base runners off of a single, a walk, and another fielding error, loading the bases for Bonney Lake. The Panthers were only able to get one run out of the loaded bases opportunity, extending their lead to 4-0 by the beginning of the third inning.
The Wolves made a pitching change in the top of the fourth, subbing out Gadberry for Brady Wofford.
“It’s not the pitching,” Kenyon said. “We just got to be able to compete defensively.”
Wofford got out of the third, only letting up one hit and not allowing any runs, giving SK an opportunity to score runs of their own. Rory Alonzo gave SK their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth, a single to center field. Alonzo advanced to second after a fielding error by the Panthers. Nonetheless, Koichi Castro hit into a double play, ending the inning for the Wolves.
Franklin Fox hit a deep triple to left field in the top of the sixth, giving the Wolves their best opportunity to score a run all game. Bailey Keiser was able to drive Fox home with a single to left field, giving the Wolves their first run of the game and shrinking their deficit to 4-1.
Castro hit a single to left field in the top of the seventh and advanced to second off a wild pickoff attempt to first, but was left stranded to end the game.
