Vikings steamroll Trojans for league title

The North Kitsap Vikings and Olympic Trojans both came into the final regular-season football game with identical 7-1 records.

Although Olympic was actually higher in the rankings, NK proved to be the better squad, winning easily 42-0 and claiming the Olympic League crown.

The Vikings capitalized on an early mistake when Olympic fumbled a punt return. Running back Benen Lawler scored on a 6-yard run a few plays later.

Olympic’s Joshua Gauyan tried to be the heart of the Trojans’ offense as he caught passes and ran the ball several times. However, NK’s defensive line held the Trojans to just one first down in the first quarter.

Instead, the Vikings capitalized on great field position. Logan Sloman and Caleb Callahan both caught touchdown passes in the red zone to boost the lead to 21-0 in the first quarter. Sloman continued to be the main component of the Vikings offense as he caught a 40-yard pass to make it 28-0.

As Olympic began to march down the field, the Viking defense stripped the ball away, leading to another score for NK to end the first half.

Olympic used ball control for seven- and eight-minute drives in the second half, however both ended in turnovers inside NK’s 20-yard line.

The Vikings finished the scoring in the third quarter when Lawler walked into the end zone from the 1-yard line.

Both teams began to run out the clock in the fourth quarter with their backups.

With the win, the Vikings will be looking at several home playoff games while the Trojans will have to bounce around in the postseason.
