The state Transportation Commission approved new passenger and vehicle ferry fare increases Aug. 6, which will begin to go into effect later this fall.
Starting Oct. 1, both vehicle and passenger fares will increase by an average of 3% and again in May 2026, per a news release.
For example, fares on the Seattle/Bremerton and Seattle/Bainbridge routes will increase as follows:
A full round-trip fare for walk-on passengers will increase from $11.05 to $11.35. A one-way fare for standard vehicle & driver will increase from $19.70 to $20.25. While a standard vehicle multiride pass will increase from $319.20 to $328, per WSTC.
A pilot program looking at extending the expiration date on multiride passes from 90 days to 120 days is also planned to start in May 2026. And the summer peak season surcharge will be increased to 35% on all routes, aligning with the current rate for the San Juan Island-Anacortes route.
The changes will support Washington State Ferries reaching a $408.8 million revenue target set by the state legislature for the 2025-2027 biennium. The fare changes were developed based on a recommendation from WSF and supported by the Ferry Advisory Committee on Tariff, a citizen group that advises WSF, per the release.
Toll exemptions will also be repealed for both public and privately operated transit vehicles and rideshare vehicles on tolled bridges, starting Oct. 1. The changes will only apply to the Highway 520 bridge in Seattle and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
“Current toll exemptions offered to transit vehicles on the Express Toll Lane system and the (Highway) 99 tunnel will remain in effect,” the release states.
