A chance to bid on a tantalizing one-week vacation in a Maui condo and other items while at the same time supporting a fund for breast cancer patients takes place this month at the annual Kathleen Sutton Inspirational Fund auction, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club.
Valuable paintings, a gift certificate to the Clearwater Hotel, 18 holes of golf for two including cart, designer sunglasses, a new bicycle, electric tools and much more will be available to bid on, donated by North Kitsap businesses.
Fine hors d’oeuvres, beverages, a no-host bar and a live performance by violinist Elisha Reinhart will round out the afternoon that features a live and silent auction. Quentin Gilman will serve as auctioneer. Information on the fund will also be available. The annual auction is the primary fund-raiser for the Sutton fund and last year raised over $10,000.
Fund members include Vivi-Ann Parnell, Janice Kutz, Mary McFarlane and Nancy Blindhem.
Founded in 2003 by Kathleen Sutton who died of breast cancer in 2004, the Kathleen Sutton Inspirational Fund assists women by paying for transportation costs to Seattle for breast cancer treatments, including ferry tickets, gas, taxis and parking. Sutton lost her battle with cancer one year after helping to establish the first silent auction.
This year, the fund was extended to serve women from Jefferson and Clallam counties as well as Kitsap. Information on the fund is distributed to breast cancer patients through pre-surgery packets at Kitsap’s Harrison Hospital and care centers in Seattle.
Sutton was a Kingston resident and active volunteer. She served as president of the local chamber of commerce and helped organize the Fourth of July parade. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998, she went on to build team Flo On (named in memory of Kingston resident Florence Parnell) into one of the largest independent community teams in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
The suggested donation to attend the auction is $25, but the primary goal according to organizers, is getting the word out to everyone that the fund is available.
In conjunction with the auction, Marsha Dohrendorf, owner of Kingston Naturals in downtown, has donated a fine table lamp and art print, valued at $120, which will be raffled off at the auction. The lamp features five white tulip shades; the print, by Paul Peel, is entitled “The Young Biologist.†Both are on display at Kingston Naturals until the auction.
Raffle tickets are on sale for $1 each or six for $5 and are available at Kingston Naturals, the yacht club or from any Kathleen Sutton fund member.
