Investigators say the person responsible for the death of 6-year-old Jenise Wright would have had muddy shoes and clothing.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said during a press briefing this morning that the heavily wooded area where the girl’s body was found is under deep canvass and very muddy. Traversing the area would leave a person with a “significant amount” of mud on their shoes and clothing, he said.

Wilson says investigators are asking for the public’s help in providing information about anyone they know who had muddy shoes and clothing beginning late Saturday, when Janice was last seen by her parents at around 10 p.m., and into the early part of the week.

“The person who may be responsible for the disappearance of Jenise is going to have muddy footwear, whether it’s shoes or boots, they’ll have muddy pants and quite likely a muddy shirt,” Wilson said. “If you know somebody who had, or you saw somebody who was covered in mud, or you know someone who had a favorite item of clothing or footwear that they have disposed of, that’s something investigators need to know and would like to talk to you about.”

Wilson also said today that all residents of the Steele Creek Mobile Home Park where Jenise lived have been or will be subjected to voluntary DNA testing.

“This is a very simple process,” he said. “There’s nothing invasive about it.”

Wilson said the collection process involves a Q-tip brushed against the inside of a person’s cheek. Family members of Jenise and others have also provided DNA samples to authorities. Wilson said those samples could help eliminate people as possible suspects.

“This is an elimination factor,” he said.

Wilson said that an autopsy was under way and it was hoped that investigators would have some information about the results at a 4 p.m. briefing this afternoon.
