Kitchen fire kills dog; causes extensive damage to home

Central Kitsap firefighters began the new year by extinguishing a fire that caused major damage to a single story Tracyton home at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 1.

According to the Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, the owner was not home at the time of the fire, but one of two dogs inside the residence died during the blaze.

The home is located on the 6000 block of Silver Beach Drive NW.

There was extensive fire damage to both the kitchen and attic with significant smoke damage throughout the entire structure.

The loss was estimated to be $125,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A total of 32 fire personnel and 17 vehicles from Bremerton, Puget Sound Federal Fire and the Poulsbo Fire Department worked to fight the fire.

Two people were injured in a head-on collision on Kitsap Way on New Year’s Eve. A woman  driving a minivan swerved into the wrong lane and collided with another vehicle, said Steven Strachan, Bremerton Police chief.

Both drivers were taken to Tacoma General Hospital, said Russ Winger, state patrol spokesman. They were reported to be in satisfactory condition this week.

State patrol suspects alcohol was a factor. Officers obtained a warrant and blood sample of the causing driver, according to Winger.

On New Year’s morning,  traffic officer JD Miller was driving on Belfair Valley Road when he noticed a scrape on a tree, said Bremerton Police Chief Steven Strachan. Miller turned his car around to take a look and then found a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu in a ravine, Strachan said.

The 22-year-old driver was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma where he later died, hospital officials reported.

Law enforcement officials believe the driver went into the ravine around 2 a.m.
