POULSBO — Maddie Boe’s only point of the game came on a free throw with 23 seconds left in the game.

It ended up being the difference for the Roughriders, who picked up a much-needed Olympic League win, their first of the season, on the road against the Vikings on Jan. 6.

North Kitsap created opportunities to tie or win the game after Boe’s free throw made the score 42-40.

The Vikings made a free throw of their own and then forced a turnover to regain possession with 16 seconds remaining.

But Olivia Selembo’s lay-in fell short and North Kitsap was unable to get off another shot before time expired. The final score was 42-41.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Port Angeles’ Katyn Flores and Lauren Lunt each hit two key 3-pointers.

Flores and Hayley Baxley paced the Riders with nine points each, while Lunt had eight.

Along with her important free throw, Boe had six rebounds and topped Port Angeles with six assists and seven steals.

“Her defense, rebounding and floor leadership were huge for us last night,” Riders coach Michael Poindexter said.

Sophomore post Nizhoni Wheeler scored seven points and had 10 points.

“Nizhoni played her best all-around game of the year, both rebounding well and anchoring our 2-3 zone,” Poindexter said.

That zone defense held North Kitsap’s leading scorer, Rebekah Baugh, to 11 points.

Port Angeles (1-2, 4-6) continues league play with a big matchup on the road against rival Sequim (2-2, 5-5) on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

Tuesday’s loss drops North Kitsap, one of the preseason league favorites, to 1-3 in Olympic League (4-5 overall).
