Seattle jazz singer Kay Bailey and her trio wrap up the Collective Visions Gallery 2005-2006 concert series season with a performance June 16.
Bailey, who has been singing in clubs in the Seattle area for five years, said music was a big part of her childhood.
“As a child, I grew up in a home filled with the passion of song. My father’s jazz records rang from room to room. Classic artists including John Coltrane, Louie Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis excited and soothed me throughout my youth in Cleveland,†she said.
In her biography Bailey relates that her father, “Poppo,†loved his music, and loved to sing along with the music, “but he was always a little too shy to really finish a song. Now at age 84, when he comes to hear me sing, he sits quietly and waits for me to call him up to the mic and sing a song with his daughter. He still knows all the words,†she said.
Bailey is a frequent performer at Seattle venues such as Cafe Champagne, Pacific Place, The Pampas Room, the Sorrento Hotel and the Wellington Tea House.
Her repertoire includes many classics she learned from her father’s records, but she also includes an eclectic mix of songs from artists on the periphery of the jazz world, such as Van Morrison, Leon Russell, Dan Hicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Norah Jones.
“I love to sing and there is a big world out there full of passionate songwriters creating new classics for future generations to discover,†she said. “I love bringing great music to audiences of all ages.â€
