Hats off to the ‘quiet guys’

They’re not much for tooting their own horn but if we had our way, members of the Kiwanis would have an entire band playing 24/7 in their honor. The organization turns 90 this Friday and in true Kiwanis’ fashion, they’re quietly celebrating the accomplishment.

North Kitsap is blessed with two groups in Poulsbo and Kingston. Between them, their local contributions to civic improvement have been staggering. Yet, the organization’s profile is, more often than not, that of a behind-the-scenes leader. The Kiwanis has rarely sought out the limelight and instead seem to put efforts that could have been spent on self-promotion into various projects.

In the wake of their good deeds, the humbleness of these folks is pretty amazing.

The Key Club at North Kitsap High School; the Builders Club at Kingston Junior High; work with Habitat for Humanity; park upkeep; education; and public safety awareness — not to mention the international mission to combat Iodine Deficiency Disorder — are just a few of the efforts the Kiwanis take on each year.

Even so, the group does it all without much fanfare.

The North Kitsap Herald sincerely wishes the Kiwanis a happy 90th birthday and thanks its members for being a shining example of community service.

You make us all proud to call this area home.
