HANSVILLE — With road projects popping up all over Kitsap County during the high construction season, Hansville will not be left in the dust this year.
However, vehicles going to and from the community might be, as Hansville Road’s intersection with Little Boston and Eglon roads is widened to create north and south turn lanes. Construction began June 26, and is set to continue into the fall.
“Right now, the construction company is grubbing, meaning moving stuff out of the sides of the road,†said Kitsap County Public Informational Specialist Callene Abernathy. The county hired Northern Con-Agg as the construction company to do the road work, she said. The contract is for $319,000.
“We’re not going to really start until Aug. 1,†said NCA Project Manager Paul Szretter, noting the actual construction of the lanes and paving will occur after the utility companies have relocated their poles and wires to allow room for the wider road surface. “After that, it’s weather dependent. It should take about a month and a half to complete.â€
So far, both Abernathy and Szretter said the community hasn’t voiced any major complaints about the project.
“I think that it’s a good idea,†said Dody Solaas, a Hansville resident and member of the Greater Hansville Traffic and Safety Advisory Committee. “Anything to improve the safety of the roads in Hansville.â€
Though the construction is welcomed for the safety it will bring, the traffic waits that have already been present haven’t bothered anyone yet.
Szetter said conditions are not bad now, but when the road work starts in earnest, traffic delays at the busy intersection could be up to 10 minutes. He added, however, that construction workers will focus on helping get motorists through at a steady rate to minimize wait times and prevent backups.
“There shouldn’t be much of a delay,†he said. “We’ll keep the cars moving.â€
Abernathy agreed and said the county is overseeing the project and working to ensure traffic on Hansville’s primary thoroughfare doesn’t build up.
Solaas said the times she’s driven through since the project started, the wait to get through hasn’t been bad at all. She added that residents in Hansville are usually open to projects that will make the community safer.
“The public has always been OK with improvements to the road,†she said.
“I live in the area,†Szetter said. “So I understand the need to make the road safer for drivers.â€
“The traffic community has been aware that was a dangerous intersection,†Solaas said. “We are in favor of improving it.â€
