POULSBO — As far as the food chain goes, eagles and fish typically don’t get along.
But Doug Vogel is looking to change this perception — in a way. The Eagle Scout candidate is aiming to complete the first viewing platform at Fish Park just east of the Lindvig Bridge as part of his effort to earn his badge with Troop 1502 at Poulsbo Presbyterian Church.
“I’ve been in Scouts probably since I was 6 and have been in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts,†said Vogel, who is a freshman at North Kitsap High School.
With all of the required 21 merit badges for his Eagle Scout award completed, an Eagle Scout project is one of the few obstacles remaining in his way as he pursues the organization’s highest award.
“Once I get this done, I’ve got my board of review and then hopefully my award ceremony,†he said as he and a crew of eight other Scouts tackled the project Saturday morning.
The idea for the platform came at the end of an exhaustive search that led from his Scoutmaster to Poulsbo Parks and Recreation Director Mary McCluskey, who suggested something at Fish Park.
“I’ve probably put in 50 to 60 hours myself and with my parents’ help and all the other volunteers we’ve probably got 150 to 160 hours of labor and planning,†Vogel said.
After plans for the project were approved, Vogel and his crew installed the concrete supports for the platform in mid-May and had just begun the actual construction of the platform Saturday when a problem arose.
“All of our materials didn’t arrive, so I’ve got to get that figured out and hopefully, we’re going to get it done in the next couple of weeks,†he said.
Instead of throwing up his hands and calling it a day, Vogel said the materials issue was just a matter of miscommunication and he was hopeful it could be resolved quickly.
“There’s not much we can do without the materials we need, but we’ll do what we can,†Vogel said.
Vogel is the first Eagle Scout candidate to do a project at Fish Park, but McCluskey said she has spoken with several other candidates about doing similar projects in the park.
“That’s what Fish Park is all about,†she said. “It’s a collaborative volunteer effort.â€
Even with the setback, Vogel should remain on track to complete the project by the end of the month, McCluskey said, noting that the Poulsbo-North Kitsap Rotary Club will be building a platform at the park as well.
