POULSBO — While the Nov. 10 wine tasting raised a glass to help North Kitsap Fishline pay for its share of the retaining wall behind its building, the food bank is sending out an S-O-S to the North End.
The S-O-S stands for Stock Our Shelves.
Fishline raised about $8,000 at the event, providing a tremendous boost toward paying for the wall, said Fishline board president Mary Barker.
Even with the fund-raiser’s success, Fishline still needs help during the holidays, said Fishline executive director Margie Addington.
“Since the cold weather hit, we’ve doubled our numbers (f requests),†Addington said.
Currently, Fishline has four programs needing a boost from the community in order to ensure their success and meet the needs of less fortunate families in the North End, she said.
The Thanksgiving food basket program is at the top of the list as baskets will be picked up Nov. 21 and Nov. 22, she said.
“We’ll have some baskets available for those who haven’t signed up,†she said.
Those meals will be available on Nov. 23 on a first-come, first-served basis.
Next on the list is Fishline’s Toy Shop, which provides toys and other Christmas gifts for needy families, she said. Keeping with the Christmas theme, Fishline could also use help with Christmas food baskets.
Last, but certainly not least, on the list is the food banks’ adopt-a-family program, which allows individuals or organizations to buy groceries and meals for a particular family for the holidays, she said.
“We have a lot of choices right now,†Addington said. “Our shelves are really bare.â€
Many families face their greatest time of need during the holidays she said.
So far, Fishline has been able to meet its increased demand thanks in large part to the numerous food drives which have taken place during recent weeks, she said.
“We’re keeping our heads above water, but any donation is gladly accepted,†she said.
Anyone wanting to donate is encouraged to contact Fishline or visit its 3rd Avenue building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday or from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Even though Fishline hosted a fund raiser Friday to pay for its share of the retaining wall, Mayor Kathryn Quade said it is still in need of assistance from the community.
“People need to realize Fishline is coming out of a hole, and they need to continue to be generous in supporting Fishline,†Quade said.
The holiday season is traditionally one of the busiest for the food bank and Quade said she fully expects the community to rise to the occasion and meet the need.
Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce executive director Stuart Leidner echoed Quade’s sentiments and said Fishline plays a vital role in the community, especially during the holidays.
“Fishline is extremely important as part of meeting the needs in the community,†Leidner said.
Anyone interested in donating to Fishline should call the food bank at (360) 779-5190 or mail their donation to Fishline at P.O. Box 1517, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
