KINGSTON — Commuters can now enjoy a glass of wine or a bite to eat on their way home from work on the Kingston-Edmonds ferry route.

The M/V Puyallup reopened its galley at the beginning of July, as part of the latest round of ferry galleys to reopen with new food service. The ferries have been without such amenities since January 2004.

“We expect to have service on the M/V Spokane on the Kingston-Edmonds route by the end of this month,” said Nove Meyers, President of Olympic Cascade Services, the Seattle-based vendor operating the galleys on many of the ferry routes.

Food and drink served includes popcorn, Ivar’s clam chowder, chicken wraps, salads, chili, breakfast items, coffee and pizza. The company first started dishing up goods in May on the Bainbridge Island-Seattle route.

But it’s been slow going — the company has had several challenges in getting food service started because of lack of staff. While Meyers was expecting to utilize all the employees from Sodexho, the last food vendor, she said Olympic Cascade Services is actually short about 30 people.

But everyone is working together to make sure the service comes back.

“I’m thrilled because I simply think the food service enhances the (ride),” said WSF customer information manager Susan Harris-Huether.
