PORT ORCHARD — The driver involved in the car accident, which resulted in the death of one North Kitsap teen and serious injury to another on March 8, has been sentenced by Kitsap County Superior Court.

Joseph Lee McCann, 19, was charged Dec. 22 with one count of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault following the two-car accident.

McCann, driving an older model Ford Escort, was pulling out of the parking lot of a church and turning left onto Hansville Road March 8.

Police said McCann had looked to his left and saw a Jeep Cherokee coming northbound and thought he had enough time to turn, then looked right, saw it was clear and then proceeded to turn left.

However, just as the Escort cleared the center line, the Cherokee, driven by a 55-year-old Hansville woman, collided with the driver’s side of the Escort.

Of the six people involved, four were transported to Harrison Hospital for injuries. The other two, Kyle Sizemore, then a junior at North Kitsap High School and Josh Morton, then a senior at NKHS, were both airlifted to Harborview for serious injuries. Sizemore later died and Morton suffered serious injuries.

McCann was sentenced to 34 months in jail and must complete a driver’s education course.
