Delilah Rene Luke quietly closed Delilah’s Cozy Kitchin and laid off an employee who worked at the Port Orchard Pavilion, after the holiday season.

Delilah has kept Richard Washek, the artist at Wooden You Love It around to help remodel Delilah’s Cozy Kitchin, which may morph into something new, according to Kraig Kitchin, who works closely with Delilah, the nationally known radio personality who makes her home and operates several businesses in Port Orchard.

“We thought we’d take the period of time after the holiday season to really clean the restaurant and consider how we might remodel, not only the look and feel of the restaurant, but also the menu,” said Kitchin.

“It may reopen at the end of January,” he said. “We don’t have a date yet. That’s to be determined.”

An employee at The Candy Shoppe, who worked for Delilah’s Cozy Kitchin, said he and the rest of the restaurant’s staff were laid off suddenly.

And rumors cropped up that the Pavilion, another Bay Street Business run by Delilah, had also closed.

But Kitchin said that those rumors are false.

“It has never closed down,” he said. “We did say goodbye to an employee after Christmas, but we are continuing to be open for the rest of this year.”

And The Pavilion is still accepting reservations.

The answering machine at the Pavilion has been full for several days, but Kitchin said Delilah has no intention of closing it.

And, he said, they were sad to let go of the Pavilion employee, who was, “someone we care for a great deal but could no longer sustain in a working relationship.”

Wooden You Love It, will be open for several hours each week, and they may vary in the future.

Currently, Washek plans to work in the studio from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and keep the studio open during those hours.

But the hours may vary in the future.

“Delilah’s always morphing into something else in the business world,” said Cindy Lucarelli, executive director of The Cedar Cove Association. “She’s not one of those people who just draws a line and says ‘it’s done, nothing’s going to come from this.’”

City Councilman Jerry Childs said that he hasn’t spoken directly with Delilah, but had heard rumors about Delilah’s businesses closing.

“I did hear that The Pavilion was closed and The Cozy Kitchin was closed,” he said. “And someone told me that the Cozy Kitchin might reopen with different menu selection.”

The city’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee, which Childs chairs, met on Jan. 12 discuss what it could do to foster a more business-friendly climate.

“A beautiful weekend was tarnished by bad news about several local businesses closing,” Childs posted on his Facebook page on Jan. 3. “Mount up faithful, we need to fight back.”

Other Bay Street businesses that have closed since November include Los Cabos Family Mexican Restaurant and the Historic Orchard Theater.

Blondie’s Restaurant on Piperberry Way also closed.
