If you were planning on wearing a tuxedo to the next Bremerton Symphony concert, better splash it with a little fake blood and add a cape. And don’t forget the fangs.
The Bremerton Symphony Association holds its third annual “Spooktacular†family Halloween concert Oct. 22, with fun for everyone.
“It’s for anyone who is a child at heart,†Elizabeth Stoyanovich, music director, said of the concert.
Stoyanovich started the family concert series when she joined the symphony three seasons ago, and said the Halloween concert is second only to the December holiday concert in popularity.
Everyone — from the young concert-goers to the seasoned musicians — is encouraged to attend in costume.
“The costumes are getting more elaborate,†Stoyanovich said. “People are going to have to get really creative if they want to win the contest.â€
That would be the costume contest, just one of many party-type activities that go along with the concert.
The pre-concert festivities include a glass blower who will be creating hand blown pumpkins, a paranormal expert who will talk about ghosts and other creepy things, and an instrument “petting zoo,†where kids can get up close and personal with instruments such as a bassoon or french horn.
During the concert Stoyanovich will sprinkle the musical program with activities such as the much-anticipated costume contest and a treasure hunt for something related to the music on the program.
Oh yes, the music. The program is no more than an hour in length and features music that young listeners will probably recognize but have never seen performed live. For many, this will be their first live symphony experience.
On the program are “Overture from Die Fledermaus,†AKA “The Bat,†by Strauss, the booming “The Ride of the Valkyries†by Wagner, and songs from music soundtracks. Those songs include excerpts from “Harry Potter, The Prisoner of Azkaban,†“The Lord of the Rings,†“James Bond 007,†“The Incredibles,†“The Twilight Zone†and “E.T.â€
“We want to expose children to the orchestra and make it fun and entertaining for them†Stoyanovich said.
Children of all ages are welcome to attend the concert, 2 p.m. Oct. 22, Bremerton Performing Arts Center, 1500 13th St., Bremerton.
Tickets are $22 adults, $10 youth. Family and group rates available. For tickets call (360) 373-1722 or visit www.bremertonsymphony.org.
