Chocolate maker sweetens library | Check It Out | February

Welcome to Library Lover’s Month for 2010.

At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, our Kingston Library book group will meet in the Indianola Room to discuss “An Ordinary Woman: a Dramatized Biography of Nancy Kelsey” by Cecelia Holland. This is an intimate portrait of a remarkable woman who played a crucial role in the settlement of the West and was the first American woman to set foot in California.

Come and join our children’s librarian, Tomi Whalen, for a drop-in Valentine craft event from 4 -7:30 p.m. Feb. 8. Make some for your friends and some for yourself.

The Kingston Friends of the Library will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 10. They will host Jill Jean, director of the Kitsap Regional Library system, who will speak about the possibility of a library levy election in November.

At 2 p.m. Feb. 10, we will have a demonstration of chocolate making by Amy’s Decadent Chocolates. Amy Jablonski will be speaking about her passion for anything chocolate. We sincerely hope she provides samples.

Our morning Story Times for Little Ones will continue at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays. Please join us for stories, music and crafts.

All branches of the Kitsap Regional Library will be closed in observance of President’s Day on Feb. 15.

The Classic Book Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16. It will discuss “Souls of Black Folk” by W.E.B. DuBois, which was included in Jay Parnini’s “Promised Land: Thirteen books that Shaped America.”

We are offering a Dental Puppet Show for children at 3 p.m. Feb. 18, in the Kingston Room of the Community Center (next door to the library). Local dentists will bring a giant toothbrush and teeth and even thwart “Mr. Decay.”

Last year, the Kingston Rotary donated funds to the Kingston Library in honor of people who spoke to their group. I promised to let you know what we purchased.

Due to space limitations, we will talk about one title at a time.

The first title, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba, relates how an enterprising teenager in Malawi builds a windmill from scraps he finds around his village. He helps bring electricity and a future to his family.

Come on in and check it out.
