The Bremerton Fire Department labor union agreed to a 3.4 percent wage freeze to save the City of Bremerton $191,000 in 2011, the city announced Tuesday.

The concession is a continuation of previous freezes, Financial Services Director Becky Hasart said. The 54 members of the fire department union were scheduled to receive a 1.4 percent pay increase in 2011 and a 2 percent raise in 2011, but agreed to forgo both increases. The city’s departments were asked to cut a total of $1.4 million from their budgets in September. The City Council passed a $35.5 million budget Dec. 1.

In addition to the wage freeze, the union also agreed to eliminate a training lieutenant position for 2011.
