Behind the scenes

If you’re like most people your involvement in local arts and entertainment involves plopping your butt in a seat for two-plus hours and watching the performance unfold before you. While they need an audience, those shows don’t run themselves. They depend on volunteers, who have day jobs, kids and critters just like you do. The difference is, these folks make a difference in their community. They get involved.

Every theatrical production takes hundreds of hours of preparation, from auditioning and rehearsing to set construction and costume sewing. While Bainbridge Performing Arts has some paid staff, even it depends on volunteers to run the program.

If you’d like to become less of a spectator and more of a participant in community theater, consider giving one of these groups a call.

It boggles the mind to think how many volunteers have assisted Bremerton Community Theatre productions in its 63-year history, but they’re always looking for more.

The theater has openings for house managers, ticket and reservation clerks, ticket collectors and more. Take a look at the list of volunteer opportunities at www.bremertoncommunitytheatre.org. Volunteer coordinator Larry Swan would be happy to match you up with a job at the theater.

Changing Scene Theatre Northwest is a smaller theater, but they can use assistance too. The next shows coming up are “Perfectly Frank,” Feb. 9 and “Lysistrata,” April 13. Contact Director Pavlina Morris at changingscenenorthwest@hotmail.com.
