SILVERDALE — It’s all down to the last wrestler on the mat.
His team is trailing and needs at least four points to salvage the victory. He hasn’t had a pin all season, but that doesn’t keep him from getting one when it matters most.
While this scenario is usually one that plays out in the dreams of high school wrestlers, it was the North Kitsap Vikings’ reality at Saturday’s Olympic Dream Duals team tournament at the Kitsap Fairgrounds Pavilion.
Trailing Davis (of Yakima) in its third-place/fifth-place bout, the Vikings seemed ready for fifth, falling behind 33-12 heading into the 152-pound match.
But something happened after junior Jacob Jones pinned his Davis opponent at 152.
“Jacob Jones came back, got a pin,†NK coach Jon Cooke said. “That really started the ball rolling.â€
The ball didn’t stop until heavyweight senior Bill Plowman pinned his opponent, capping a run of seven pins in eight matches for North Kitsap, allowing the Vikings to overcome a 21-point deficit in winning 42-39, with Plowman’s pin the decisive victory.
“That’s a first-time experience for me,†Plowman said, showing impeccable timing in netting his first pin fall of the season. “Whenever you’re in a position to do that for your team, it feels great.â€
Plowman got out in front on points when it looked like time might expire before he could get more than a mere decision. Had Plowman only scored a decision, the match would have been tied, with the victor being decided on criterion (in this case, most wins in the match).
But Plowman got his pin, securing the win and a share of third place at the second annual Dream Duals tourney.
“It’s great. There was no doubt in my mind,†Plowman said. “I knew we needed to get at least four points. I really needed that pin today. It’s nice to get that.â€
Cooke said he’d never been in a match quite like that one.
“That was awesome. The kids just came back,†Cooke said. “I don’t think we’ve ever been that far down and come back to win. We worked hard all week in practice. They love it. They want to get out there and compete.â€
Aside from the win against Davis, North also topped Marysville-Pilchuck 37-34 in the first round before falling to Auburn-Riverside, 45-25, in the second round.
The Vikings then controlled their match with former Narrows League mates Shelton, 48-21, to set up the team’s victory over Davis. Host Olympic won the tournament 44-30 against Graham-Kapowsin.
Particularly pleased with the senior trio of Anthony Lindfors, Erik Hedin and Jim Smith, Cooke said the whole team flashed its potential at the dual tournament.
“All three were wonderful. It’s great for the team,†Cooke said. “I’m very impressed with all these guys. That was awesome.â€
While the team would have liked to get some non-league matches in before the tournament, Cooke said the timing was good in that it does give the Vikings some mat time prior to the start of Narrows League wrestling.
“It would have been nice to have a match in, but I’d rather have this tournament and then the league matches,†Cooke said. “This gives us some excitement and unity heading into our league matches. It’s worked out pretty nice.â€
The Vikes opened the season last night on the road against Wilson, but results were unavailable at press time. North Kitsap hosts Foss at 7 p.m. Thursday in its home opener.
