LILLIWAUP — A 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattled East Jefferson County and the Puget Sound region early Sept. 17.

The earthquake was centered on Hood Canal’s west coast in Mason County, just south of the Jefferson County line near U.S. Highway 101’s Milepost 283. That’s about 45 miles south of Port Townsend and 70 miles southeast of Port Angeles.

The jolt struck at 3:06 a.m. and had a depth of 10.2 miles, according to the University of Washington’s seismic laboratory.

Mike’s Beach Resort is just 0.2 mile south of the epicenter.

The shaking was felt as far away as Everett, Olympia and downtown Seattle, according to The Associated Press.

The Kitsap County emergency dispatch center did not receive any reports of damage or injuries.

Posts on social media suggest the shaking awakened people and frightened animals.
