Tavyn Shelton was one of the two standout Olympic swimmers in their first swim meet of the season.

The Bainbridge Spartans boys swim team sank Olympic’s chance for a win by defeating them 134-32 Nov. 14.

The Spartans claimed the top three spots in eight out of the 11 events, placing two of the top three in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle relay.

Seniors Curtis Stewart and Thomas Witty led the Spartans with two state qualifying times. Stewart finished with a 53.08 second time in the 100-yard butterfly and was on the 200-medley relay team. Witty also competed for the relay team and qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.68.

Freshman Carter Cox led the 200-yard medley relay team while senior Jason Nordgreen anchored that team with a time of 21.79 seconds.

Cox continued to impress in his high school debut by finishing first and qualifying for districts in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.30.

Olympic’s Tavyn Shelton and Matthew Morrey led the Trojans to 18 of their 32 points. Shelton placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, third in the backstroke with a 1:03.68, third in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:02.30 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a 25.05.

Morrey was a part of both relay teams. In addition, he finished third in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:37.33, and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:13.47.

Overall, the Spartans had 30 swimmers or relay teams qualify for districts while Olympic had four. Bainbridge will look to improve its times Jan. 6 at Port Angeles while Olympic will look to add some district times in a tri-meet Dec. 20 at Olympic.
