SK hosts playoff game despite 1-0 loss to Rogers

A hard-fought Senior Night for the South Kitsap girls soccer team turned up empty in a 1-0 loss to the Rogers Rams Oct. 26.
Coming off a season-high five-goal performance against Bellarmine Oct. 24 that ended a 0-2-1 skid, the Wolves were looking to secure a winning record heading into postseason.
To do so, they needed to upset the best team in the South Puget Sound League 4A in the Rams, who had only lost one match in conference play. Even more impressive was that 10 of their 12 wins came by shutout.
Rogers struck quickly in the first five minutes on a 22-yard shot. Neither team could capitalize on scoring chances the rest of the way. Cold temperatures and a stiff wind battered the Wolves as they tried to get back into the match. A 25-yard shot in the middle of the field with 9 minutes remaining in the first half bounced off the crossbar, the closest SK got to scoring.
Before the game, 11 team members who are seniors were recognized. Family members and friends walked onto the field with each senior as their plans for the future were announced to the crowd.
The Wolves finished their regular season with a record of 5-6-2, securing a 12th seed for the district tournament. They will stay home to begin postseason play Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. against Mount Rainier.
