PORT ORCHARD — Hundreds of Kitsap residents will participate in the Kitsap Peninsula Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Aug. 29 — but just not in the usual way this year.

Traditionally held in Bremerton, the event won’t feature a large in-person gathering this year. Instead, participants will watch a local opening ceremony online and then walk individually or with family and friends in the location of their choice, Carrie McBride of the nonprofit organization said.

“This year, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is everywhere — on every sidewalk, track and trail across Kitsap County,” McBride said.

Participants and the public are also welcome to visit a drive-by Promise Garden display honoring all who have been impacted by the disease. It will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rotary Roundabout at Mile Hill Drive and Bethel Avenue in Port Orchard.

Last year, the event raised more than $80,000 to fight Alzheimer’s disease and provide care and support programs for local families, McBride said.

Registration is free and each participant will receive a welcome kit in the mail with five Walk to End Alzheimer’s flags to carry with them on “walk day.” Anyone who donates $100 or more will also receive a 2020 Walk to End Alzheimer’s t-shirt.
