Pee Wee Cs take chamionship

"Team beats Bainbridge, 46-8. "

“BREMERTON – During the championship game, the fans of the North Kitsap Pee Wee C team had to stop their rendition of We Will Rock You only once, when Bainbridge Island’s Austin Hurt got the ball and galloped 59 yards for a touchdown. For a moment, North Kitsap’s fans were silent. Then one voice piped: Well, we’ll win anyway! And North Kitsap did, beating Bainbridge Island 46-8 to take the county championship. Bainbridge’s record during the regular season was 7-0, making them tops in the league. North Kitsap backed their way into the playoffs with a 6-2 record, having to win a playoff tiebreaker to make their way to the championship game. But when they played Bainbridge Island at Bremerton High School field, North looked like the dominant team. They scored on their first offensive play of the game, as running back Bubby Ditmer took the ball and sprinted into the end zone, a 50-yard run. He was untouched the whole way. North got the ball back quickly as Keenan Huschke fell on a Bainbridge fumble. Huschke figured on offense as well, punching the ball in from the 1-yard-line to give North a 16-0 score (kicks are worth two points in Pee Wee football). North’s defense came to play, too. When Bainbridge’s Austin Hurt got the ball, Trevor Smith levelled him early, and the tone of the defense was set. The offense scored again after Bainbridge turned the ball over on downs. This time, after a 12-yard pickup up Ditmer, it was Jordan Camp’s turn to score, as he weaved into the end zone from 10 yards out. It was 24-0, and soon it was 30-0 after Ditmer again ran 60 yards past the Bainbridge defense for his second touchdown of the game. That was the score as the first half ended. The second half resumed, and as it began, Bainbridge tried to claw their way back into the game. But North’s defense was everywhere; stopping the running back in the backfield, halting a kick return before it began, and dragging down the quarterback. When they got the ball back, North scored again, and again it was Ditmer, running his way up the left sideline past teammates and defenders on his way to the end zone. North had a 38-0 lead. Bainbridge scored when Hurt took a pitch and followed block after block that left North Kitsap defenders bowled over. Hurt ran for 59 yards into the end zone and North’s lead was cut, 38-8. Hushke almost got his second touchdown of the game for North, running 51 yards up the right sideline. A defender swiped at his foot, and after regaining his balance Hushke looked back at the defender as he slowed down in the end zone. But a penalty, clipping, called back the play. No matter. A few plays later, Ditmer got the ball and ran up the left side for a 70-yard touchdown, his fourth of the day. North’s lead was 46-8, which was the score when the final whistle blew. After the game, Ditmer said he had been confident going into the game against the undefeated Bainbridge club. When we lost to Bainbridge (earlier in the season), we only lost by six, so I thought we had a really good shot, he said. Of his four-TD day Ditmer said, This is one of my better games. Ditmer’s backfield mate Hushke was proud of the game he played, and proud of the field it was played on. It was a nice field, he said of the Knights’ home. It was an honor playing on it. The team was presented with the championship trophy after the game. The presentation was made on the field, and all the kids crowded around to touch the trophy. The boys deserve every ounce of this, said head coach Kerry Stevens. As he walked off the field, Stevens carried the trophy. Several boys followed him, touching the trophy with their hands and walking alongside. They wouldn’t let go of it. “
