Fred Hutch’s Obliteride to spin through Kitsap Peninsula

A fun new route makes it easy to join the bike ride to obliterate cancer.

Obliteride riders will cycle through your community on Aug. 8, 2015, raising critical funds to help Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center obliterate cancer.

“We’re urging people to come join the fun and cheer us on as we ride through your neighborhood,” said Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s executive director. “Even better, come ride with us! There’s still time to sign up.”

Obliteride has five routes to choose from, ranging from 10 to 150 miles. Obliteride’s new 10-mile ride around Seattle’s Lake Union is an easy pedal that takes about an hour and needs no training. It’s a controlled course, so it’s a good option for the entire family. Funds raised from this route benefit women’s cancer research at Fred Hutch. People interested in riding or cheering on the riders can find maps of the routes on the Obliteride website.

“We know that cancer touches almost everyone. Half of all men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime,” said Dr. Gary Gilliland, president and director of Fred Hutch. “There’s a very real urgency now as we are on the cusp of amazing breakthroughs in cancer research. The effort and generosity of people through events like Obliteride are vital to our work toward cancer cures, and so appreciated.”

Obliteride is more than just a bike ride. It’s an epic weekend with fun parties and delicious food, including a Tom Douglas salmon dinner. All riders are treated to a kickoff party at Gas Works Park on Friday, Aug. 7. The private party is a thank you to riders who are required to raise at least $500 to participate.

Obliteride has raised more than $4 million in just two years for lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch. One hundred percent of every dollar raised goes to cancer research at Fred Hutch.

People interested in participating can still sign up to ride, donate or volunteer. Riders have until Sept. 30, 2015 to complete their fundraising.
