Burley-Glenwood Elementary School honored as national award-winning schools

OLYMPIA — Burley-Glenwood Elementary School was one of 12 state schools honored for winning national awards given through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act during a ceremony March 13 at the Governor’s Mansion.

The awards recognize schools that met the federal Adequate Yearly Progress and Annual Measurable Objectives standards in reading and/or math, as well as closing the opportunity gaps between white students and traditionally underrepresented students.

Burley-Greenwood was honored as one of three State Title 1 Distinguished Schools. The other school were Madison Elementary in Olympia and Neah Bay Elementary in Cape Flattery.

State Title I Distinguished Schools will receive $5,000 each. The money may be used for:

• Professional development for improvement of the teachers’ knowledge base in an area of expertise, new area of expertise related to current position, or increased expertise in effective classroom practices.

• Team-building and teacher planning opportunities for the purpose of furthering the work on developing school-reform strategies.

• Development of additional research-based instruction.

• Development of additional strategies, curriculum and training models.

“I’m proud of all these schools,” Dorn said. “The fact that what they’ve done is being recognized on a national scale speaks very well to how they’re doing and how Washington is doing.”
