KINGSTON — Apart from a boat breakdown and a railway gate malfunction, no sailings were cancelled on the Kingston to Edmonds ferry route this summer.

That marked a small victory for a route where sailings have often been cancelled to compensate for ferries running late, Washington State Ferries Planning Director Ray Deardorf said. Ferries removed several sailings from the Kingston summer schedule this year in an effort to improve on time performance. It will discuss the results of the schedule change and take public comments at a Sept. 28 meeting in Kingston.

Deardorf said the schedule succeeded in getting more boats to run on time, though boats ran later as traffic increased in July and August.

“System-wide, on-time-performance really drops during those periods,” Deardorf said.

Gains in performance weren’t enough to satisfy some commuters, who said they didn’t compensate for the loss in sailings.

Deardorf said Ferries wants to learn more about the priorities of riders at the upcoming meeting.

The meeting will be hosted by the Kingston Ferry Advisory Committee.

Deardorf said Ferries staff will present its most recent breakdown of on-time-performance data and give an update on possible improvement to the congested Edmonds terminal.

Ferries will also take suggestions on improving the schedule and loading and unloading procedures.

Ferries will have time to mull schedule changes during the quieter fall and winter months, Kingston Ferry Advisory Committee Chair Walt Elliott said.

“The question is, what do we do next summer?” Elliott said.

The Kingston Ferry Advisory Committee will host a meeting to discuss ferry schedules and performance at 7 p.m., Sept. 28 in the Kingston Community Center on State Route 104.
