The rumble of vintage engines and the gleam of polished chrome filled downtown Port Orchard Aug. 10 for the 37th annual Cruz classic car show, a summer tradition that nearly got moved to another location.
Organized by the Saints Car Club, the event drew many vehicles and spectators to Bay Street, accompanied by live music, grilled food aromas, and a canned food drive supporting South Kitsap Helpline. With 60 award categories and dash plaques for participants, the show offered something for every car enthusiast.
Earlier this year, the future of The Cruz was uncertain after new city regulations for public events raised safety concerns. City officials opposed the organizers’ request to allow vehicles to freely enter and exit the event while thousands of pedestrians filled the streets, citing a significant safety risk.
As a result, SCC initially planned to move the event to the Rodeo Drive-In Theater near the Bremerton Airport. However, after ongoing discussions between the club and city officials, a safety plan was developed that satisfied the city’s concerns, allowing the event to return to its traditional waterfront location.
Pat and Dennis Hasard attended with their 1955 Ford Thunderbird.
“I was a freshman in high school, and it was my fantasy to have one. It didn’t look like this when we got it.” Pat said.
Pat praised the event’s organization and scenic setting.
“We do it every year. It’s always so well organized, and they always have plenty of help. You can’t go wrong with the waterfront.”
Ron Perewicz, one of the original organizers of The Cruz, was also on hand.
“I’ve been to every one of he Cruzes,” Perewicz said. “My friend and I helped start it, then handed it over to the Saints. We ran it for 10 years, and now I come every year to enjoy it.”
Perewicz showed off his customized 1965 Ford Ranchero, featuring a right-hand drive conversion, supercharged motor, five-speed transmission, and air ride suspension.
“It’s just a fun car to drive,” he said. “I cruise my cars; I don’t pound on them.”
