South Kitsap’s girls basketball team looked eager to get its winter break started, putting the visiting Stadium Tigers away early via a 22-2 first-half run en route to a 55-20 win in Port Orchard Dec. 19.

Coach Dexter Clark said even though it was another blowout win, he thinks his team will be able to win closer games as well.

“Right now, we’re trying to figure out as a team who can step up in certain situations, and tonight provided a lot of opportunities for that,” he said. “With one of our ‘bigs’ out, we really needed to find a way to execute through everything and work on what’s been holding us back in those close games.”

That “big” the coach referred to was senior Grace Degarimore, who was ruled out prior to the contest due to a concussion. It would largely be up to senior Kamdyn Hagerty to work the paint in her teammate’s stead.

Not only did she work, but she dominated the floor in the first 12 minutes of action. With Hagerty leading the charge, the Wolves concluded the first quarter with an 18-1 run. The run would finally be broken with 4:19 left in the half.

South Kitsap maintained the lead and went to the locker room up 32-12. Half of those points belonged to Hagerty, who would finish the night with 20.

Clark credited the efforts of the team in its entirety, noting a higher level of communication and their readiness to improve.

“We have some go-tos that we continue to go over. One thing that the girls will stress is execution and the need to be perfect. It’s something that they want to do better themselves, and that’s one thing that has gotten better since the last time,” he said.

Where Hagerty fell off in the second half, junior Mika Brady stepped in with a 10-point fourth quarter to make up her night-ending score total. Five other Wolves tallied points, too.
