A small case filled with what appear to be live hand grenades and other types of explosive devices was found in a residence in the 11000 block of Olalla Valley Road SE Dec. 1, per the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office
Contractors doing renovations on the home located the case and immediately called the homeowners, who are not living at the residence while the work is underway. The homeowner called 911 to report what was found.
Deputies responded and, after carefully inspecting the case, notified the Washington State Patrol’s bomb technicians. An explosive ordnance disposal team from Naval Submarine Base Bangor was also called to the scene and Olalla Valley Rd. SE was closed to traffic for public safety, per KCSO.
Ten grenades were found and bomb technicians determined they contained TNT, a powerful explosive. The explosive technicians also located blasting caps and other explosive devices. The EOD team from Bangor took possession of the grenades, which are believed to be military issue, KCSO says. The remainder of the explosives were secured and taken by the WSP bomb squad.
The homeowners said they had recently purchased the property and had not seen the case containing the explosives before the contractors found it. An investigation by KCSO is underway to determine how the explosives came to be on the property.
