Crosspoint Christian School in Bremerton recently won the 1B/2B girls soccer state championship, beating the Freeman Scotties 1-0 Nov. 22 after finishing with a 21-2-1 record on the season.

The win marks Crosspoint’s fourth state title, with its most recent coming in 2023 against the Kalama Chinooks.

“I think as the smallest 1B school in the entire state, [it] means a lot because, you know, our girls are spread out throughout different soccer clubs here on the peninsula,” Crosspoint coach Brent Anderson said.

Anderson took over the coaching reins a week and a half into the regular season after coaching the boys team at Crosspoint the year prior. He came in with the idea of looking to “capitalize on everything” and conveying to the girls that “this is your team.”

Allison Berens, a senior center back for the Wildcats, additionally noted that Anderson helped the girls maintain the same routine. Crosspoint, after this season, is expected to lose seven seniors, all of whom were starters, Anderson said. With that being the case, the team will look to acquire new talent.

“I know a few of the seniors came to the school, not just because the school is very fantastic academically, but because of the soccer program,” Anderson said.

The championship match against Freeman proved to be the Wildcats’ toughest matchup of the state tournament, with the Scotties proving to be a very physical opponent. Senior forward Brooke Berens noted that while it was a difficult matchup, playing clean, maintaining aggression, and having a strong defense ultimately led to the win.

The Wildcats scored the only goal of the game with six minutes remaining in the first half after Brooke was able to drive in a goal from the 10-yard line after generating 13 shots on goal in the first half.

Allison noted that communication was the key factor to Crosspoint shutting out both Freeman and their semifinal opponent, the Northwest Christian School Crusaders.

“(Just) making sure everyone had their marks and having our midfield come back on defense,” Allison said.
