The event was put on by South Kitsap Indivisible.

2,300 demonstrators in South Kitsap lined all four streets at the Bethel and Lund intersection Oct. 18 as part of the worldwide “No Kings 2” protest against the Trump administration.

The event was put on by South Kitsap Indivisible, where participants chanted, waved signs, sang to live music, danced in inflatable and donated 304 pounds of food and $1,365 to South Kitsap Helpline. An estimated 7.5 million people participated in the “No Kings 2” protests across the nation and in 27 countries, per a news release, including other local Kitsap events in Kingston, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island and Bremerton.

Participants spoke out against the policies of the Trump administration, including the current U.S. government shutdown, the release says.

“Our leadership team was extremely pleased with the enthusiastic turnout and all ages of our neighbors who gathered in Port Orchard to show their love for America in support of ‘No Kings 2,’” SK Indivisible lead Terry Loving said. “We surpassed our turnout from the first ‘No Kings’ in June (2,200), which was one of our goals, along with a lawful and peaceful protest.”

SK Indivisible’s voluntary safety and peacekeepers teams did extra training locally and in conjunction with national nonprofit activist groups via Zoom meeting to better prepare for what was billed as the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, per the release.

“I am very proud that (Port Orchard) participants repeatedly commented on how well organized and safe they feel at our protest,” Loving said. “We had crossing guards at intersections and peacekeepers helping keep people on the sidewalks. There were no incidents requiring de-escalation.”

SK Indivisible organized “No Kings 2” in partnership with non-profits Evergreen Resistance (WA Chapter 50501), West Sound Democratic Socialists of America, Kitsap Immigration Assistance Center and Washington Immigration Solidarity Network.
