PORT ORCHARD — Crews from South Kitsap Fire and Rescue and Cascade Natural Gas quickly contained a natural gas leak Feb. 11 at the 2400 block of Sidney Avenue that necessitated an evacuation of nearly 50 people from their homes to a nearby church.

At about 9 p.m., fire crews arrived to investigate reports from residents of a strong natural gas odor permeating the area. A crew from Cascade Natural Gas was quickly brought to investigate, according to a report from SKFR. As a precautionary measure, residents in the area were told to leave their premises for a safer location in a church.

After the gas leak was repaired about an hour later, the residents were allowed to return to their homes, the fire district said.
