Central Kitsap junior Shane Moskowitz captured two state titles over the weekend at the Class 4A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
Moskowitz, who also is a member of the CK cross country team, took first in the boys 3,200-meter race on the first day of competition Thursday, crushing the competition with a time of 8 minutes, 59.53 seconds. Second-place finisher Conner Peloquin of Gig Harbor finished in 9:05.37.
Two days later, the long-distance specialist added a second title with a victory in the 1,600, running a 4:13.71 to beat Emmanuel Contreras of A.C. Davis (4:15.47).
In the team competition, the CK boys earned 34 points to finish in a three-way tie for second with Todd Beamer and Kent Meridian, behind Mead of Spokane (49). The team’s last state trophy was in 2005 when it finished fourth.
“I had hoped, if everything went right, that we’d be around fourth or fifth,” coach Mark Ward said. “Bumping up to second was a huge surprise.”
The boys 400 relay team of Phillip Thomas, Kevin Lacanlale, H’arion Gaulden and Josh DeVaughn, a first-year track and field athlete who took second in the 200 in 22:17, finished second with a time of 42.63.
On the girls side, Shannon Moskowitz finished seventh in the 800 (2:18.40) and anchored the girls 400 relay to an eighth-place finish. Teammate Bethani Braun took eighth in the discus with a 109-foot-5-inch toss, a personal-best.
