WRESTLING | Cougars claim five sub-regional championships

Central Kitsap finishes fourth at 3A Narrows League meet

TACOMA — Five Central Kitsap wrestlers claimed Class 3A Narrows League Championships Saturday at Foss.

Sophomore Carsten Wheeler (126 pounds), junior Calvin Fischer (160) and seniors Josiah Milcic (132), Adam Appleton (145) and Dominick Johnson (285) all won titles and will advance to regionals today and Saturday at Inglemoor.

“We had six finalists and five champions,” CK coach Mike Harter said. “I can’t complain. We wrestled well.”

The Cougars won more sub-regional titles than Lincoln, which finished first with 300.5 points, but only placed fourth among eight teams with 232.5 points.

“We were not truly in the team hunt because we don’t have the numbers,” said Harter, adding that his team did not have a competitor in four weight classes.

Wheeler, who pinned Mount Tahoma’s Daniel Hunter in 1 minute, 39 seconds, might have been the biggest surprise.

“Carsten Wheeler has a freshman’s worth of experience between these two years,” Harter said. “To come in and win a league title, I’m pretty impressed with him.”

Two other CK competitors pinned their opponents in the championship round. Fischer defeated North Thurston’s Michael LaFrenier in 2:32, while Dominick Johnson pinned Foss’ Jackson Potts in 2:58.

“Dominick did what he did best — he’s going to take what he gets on his feet,” Harter said. “Really happy with him.”

Milcic and Appleton both earned two-point wins. Milcic defeated Shelton’s Caleb Ragsdale 4-2, while Appleton earned a 10-8 decision against Wilson’s Malcom Martin.

“Adam’s goal all year has been to win a league champion, step to regionals and step to state,” Harter said. “He’s really right on target with it.”

Senior Johnny Valenzuela, who was pinned by Shelton’s Quinn Rodius in 4:25, was the Cougars’ lone second-place finisher.
