Undefeated Vikings cruise past winless Knights

The North Kitsap volleyball squad, undefeated in league play, hosted the winless Bremerton Knights Oct. 11, and the Vikings only gave up 18 points in three sets.

The scores were 25-8, 25-3 and 25-7.

One-third of Bremerton’s points came at the beginning of the match when NK dealt with some communication mistakes. Mainalei Penitusi earned a couple of the Knights’ points in the first set before NK took over.

After several aces and kills, the Vikings took a 12-6 lead, forcing Bremerton to call its first timeout of the night. Afterward, NK’s Sophia Baugh powered the momentum in the Vikings’ favor, scoring eight of the next 10 points.

In the second set, Baugh and Mackenzie Phillips became a dynamic duo, scoring the first six points. Baugh and Phillips also served back-to-back, giving the Vikings a 16-3 lead before another Bremerton timeout.

Bremerton’s Helene Rode then tried to spark some offense for the Knights. However, Vikings’ Teegan DeVries captured several aces while Avery Pruden racked up multiple kills to win the second set.

With their backs against the wall, Bremerton looked to scrap together any points possible. The Knights kept the set close in the beginning, trailing 5-2 before Viking Iliana Brockett’s firepower kicked into gear.

Brockett sparked the Vikings’ offense to a 15-3 lead before Bremerton took its final timeout. Although the Knights looked to switch their game plan, NK’s offense was too strong, adding up points in the span of seconds.

Baugh finished the match with an ace to give NK a 3-0 victory.
