The North Kitsap Vikings (6-4) completed the series sweep against the Kingston Buccaneers (5-8, 2-7 in Olympic League), beating them on the road 7-6 April 23.

The two teams previously metApril 21, with the Vikings taking a 3-0 win over the Bucs. NK has struggled a bit this season, given the high expectations the team had, but they are starting to trend in the right direction ahead of the playoffs.

“I think we needed the sweep against Kingston, and we got Sequim next week,” Viking starting pitcher Jonathan Bourque said. “We need to do good against them, and hopefully take one from Bainbridge.”

The Vikings got on the board early in the game against the Bucs with catcher Teague Weible and first baseman Dawsyn Anderson bringing home two runs for NK off an RBI groundout and a single.

Bourque got the start on the mound for NK and forced a double play and a groundout to third base in the bottom of the first.

Nonetheless, the Kingston bats found their way in the bottom of the second with two singles from catcher Blake Agor and right fielder Cole Petrick. Petrick was eventually driven home after an NK error.

“We just need to bury teams by scoring runs in the middle [of the game],” NK head coach Jeff Weible said.

In the bottom of the fourth, Buccaneer Tristan Scott was walked and later advanced to third base, eventually reaching home through an NK pitching error and cutting the Vikings’ lead to 3-2.

Anderson hit a single to right field in the top of the fifth, giving NK two baserunners. Viking third-baseman Spencer Gillespie hit a single to left-center field, driving home Weible.

Viking Caleb Novick hit a deep double to center field in the top of the seventh, driving in Chase McDaniel to extend NK’s lead. The Bucs rallied in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases, driving in Agor, Henrik Goller, Tameilau, and Kennon Hendricks, all through RBI singles. But in the end, Kingston was one run short, sealing the victory for NK.

“We made mistakes in the field in the middle innings…we could have separated ourselves and made it a lot easier in the seventh inning,” coach Weible said. “I think we had the bases loaded in two innings [and] no outs.”
