wins two shutouts
On Tuesday the inter-district tennis teams faced off for a fun and unscheduled match. North walked away with a resounding 7-0 victory.
No. 1 singles: Zach Fohn defeated Jerol Bird, 6-1, 6-1; No. 2 singles: Rex Olsen defeated Sam Shoemaker, 6-3, 6-1; No. 3 singles: David Gerstenberger defeated Austin Dennis, 6-2, 6-0; No. 1 doubles: Jordan Seth, Conner Gallagher defeated Loren Klemesrud, Cody Combs; No. 2 doubles: Shaun McBurney, Alex Olsen defeated Cameron Groh, Nathan Hirsh, 6-2, 6-4; No. 3 doubles: Zach Turley, Sebastian Ford defeated Josh Herrera, Morgan McCalister, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2; and No. 4 doubles Chris Gracey, Steven Breitmayer defeated Erik Reichert, Brady Sunquist 7-5, 6-4.
On Wednesday North traveled to Bremerton and won 7-0.

On Friday the Vikings played Sequim at Sequim. Results of the match were not available at press time. On Monday the Vikes battle the Bucs at North Kitsap High at 4 p.m.
Buccaneer girls soccer plays tough, finishes with a tie and a loss
On Tuesday the Bucs traveled to Port Townsend and tied the Redskins 2-2, in the league-opener contest.
Meghan Antoni scored on a penalty kick 20 minutes in after being taken down in the box. At the 36th minute Antoni served up a corner kick that Freshman Tori Gerken headed in. Placing the Bucs ahead, 2-0, at halftime.
Then Port Townsend pushed, playing physical and put the Bucs on their heals, scoring a nice long shot at the 58th minute then scoring their tying goal from a corner kick that deflected off one of Kingston’s defenders into its goal. The two five-minute overtimes stayed knotted.
One of the Bucs’ key players, Kyla Jorgensen, was hurt — hopefully out only a couple of weeks — which affected Kingston’s offensive play.
On Thursday the Bucs battled North Mason in Belfair, playing a team with 14 seniors on the roster. The Bucs dropped the close game, 1-0.
Keeper Rae Ann McConnell and sweeper Rachel Tafte, combined to hold North Mason to one goal.
“I believe we grew as a team this week, showed grit against maybe the best 2A team we will face this season and I look forward to playing them again,” wrote head coach Craig Smith in an e-mail. “Our young players were 20 pounds smaller on average than them and a couple of years younger, but we not only played with them but proved to ourselves we can hold our ground and mentally deal with that kind of play. It was good for us after the letdown at PT.”
Craig noted that freshman Tori Gerken scored at PT and played four different positions at NM. She didn’t even start Tuesday and now Smith can call on her to do anything the team needs, he said.
On Tuesday the Bucs battle the Sequim Wolves at the North Kitsap Stadium, game starts at 5:30 p.m.
Vikes volleyball drops three-set match to defending state champs.
On Thursday the Vikes hosted Olympic, and lost a close three-set battle, 25-22, 27-25, 25-23.
Stats: Sarah Baugh, eight kills, 10 assists, 11 digs; Taylor Ottomano, eight kills; Lindsay Kocker, seven digs; Haley Fidler, nailed 11 of 11 serves and rocked two aces.
“This was a tough match to lose because we had a legitimate opportunity to win each game but made crucial errors at crunch time. We are a young team, and sometimes the only way to learn mental toughness is through experience,” wrote head coach Tim French in an e-mail. “This match gave our young players something to build on. I’m proud of the effort these girls are putting forth. Olympic is the defending champ and won’t go down easily.”
On Tuesday the Vikings remain home and take on Port Angles, match starts at 6:15 p.m.
Viking swimmers win big, records broken
On Thursday at the North Kitsap pool the Vikings and Buccaneers hit the water and the Vikes swam away with the victory, 112-42.
Bethany Aban crushed a 29-year-old record in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her time of 1 minute and 14.06 seconds betters Terri Gaines’ 1979 record time by nearly two seconds, 1:15.90.
“If you could have seen her reaction when she saw the time, you would have thought she just won the Olympic 100-meter breaststroke, double arm pump and all,” wrote head coach Greg Braun in an e-mail. “Way to go Bethany.”

North Kitsap Soccer Club’s NK Explosion is kickin’ strong
On Sept. 7, in premier division 1 league play — the highest division in the state — the Explosion tied Maple Valley Rapids, 1-1. NK’s Nick Tedford scored the lone goal. On Sept. 14 Explosion traveled to Moses Lake and defeated CB united 93, 4-0. Goals were scored by; Tedford, Garrett Wilder, Ismael Deluna and Sebastian Scales. On Sunday the Explosion plays the FC Shorline Lions 93 at Kingston High School at 2:30 p.m.
